Suspicion O’ Government Runs In Scottish Blood

I’m reading about Scottish immigration to the Antebellum South and I came across this page with this quote that I though worth sharing:

” Highlanders were suspicious of the road construction – seeing it as a government intrusion on their lives.”

To put it into perspective, the period he’s referring to was one of major social change and urbanisation. Highland dress was outlawed, estates were forfeited and the government, generally, was becoming more tyrannical.

What are you willing to forego in exchange for freedom?
